13th Irish International Currach Championships

The 13th Irish International Currach Championships will be held in Warrenpoint from Friday 11th – Sunday 13th August 2017.
Most of our visitors and competitors arrive on Friday and we hold the now traditional “Meet & Greet BBQ” in the evening when music and craic is provided by club members Mickey, Dermot and Gerard and whoever wants to join in.
The Championships weekend starts on Friday with our popular “Coaching for Kids”. There are morning and afternoon sessions where we give instruction and coaching to any young people who would like to come along and experience the joys of Currach Rowing. Details and times will be posted nearer the date. Full supervision and safety gear is provided at this event. Some of our visitors also get a bit of practise in on the Friday to get use to our style of Currachs
On Saturday 12th we run all the heats in the various categories. This year there are Male & Female singles, Male & Female doubles and & Mixed doubles, Male, Female and Mixed threes. Saturday evening we get together again for a bit of music and supper in the Lough & Quay.
Sunday 13th is finals day when we run off all the heats and hold the traditional University race with the last races on the day being the International Trophy. Sunday evening is the Presentation dinner and prizegiving in the Balmoral hotel.
There is a BBQ available for all our visitors on the beach on both Saturday and Sunday and if we finish our heats and finals early we let any interested spectators come out on the water and experience currach rowing. This has become increasingly popular each year.
Registration fee for the event is £25.00 this year. Included in this are all race entries, Competition souvenir T-shirt, BBQ on Fri evening, Sat & Sun beach BBQ, Supper on Saturday evening and presentation dinner on Sunday night.

Accommodation has been reserved in both the Lough & Quay and the Balmoral Hotel where preferential rates have been arranged for our visitors and both venues are located right on the seafront where the event is held. Early booking is advisable as we can only hold these rooms for a certain length of time.
As usual there is an open invitation to any individual or club who fancies a fantastic weekend of rowing, entertainment and craic. For our non-rowing visitors again this year we can organise treks through the Mourne Mountains with various walks to suit all ages and levels of fitness. These have proved very popular in recent years especially with our overseas visitors. Tours to local places of historical and cultural interest are available on both Friday & Saturday prior to, or after the day’s competition. There is also an 18 links hole Golf course in Warrenpoint for the golf enthusiast. Golf clubs etc can be provided.
